Eugene L. Arter, 88, of Shawnee Avenue, Apt., 1, Columbia, died Sunday at 9:20 p.m. at Columbia Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Ellen Aston Arter. Arter was a member of the Church of God, Columbia. He retired in 1955 from ITT Grinnell Corp., Columbia. He served in the U.S. Army during the Mexican Border conflict. Born in Northumberland County, he was a son of the late William and Susan Teloand Arter. He is survived by a son, Chester H. Arter Sr., with whom he resided; 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. (Lancaster New Era - Nov 28, 1978)
