Esther Anna Holtzman was born on November 21, 1917, in Arlington, Iowa, the daughter of John and Lura (Hoisington) Swales. She grew up in Arlington and graduated from Stanley Country School. Esther then went to Huntington College in Indiana for a year and received her Bachelor's Degree from Upper Iowa University. She also received a Master's Degree in Education from The University of Northern Iowa. On June 18, 1938, Esther was united in marriage to Jesse Holtzman in rural Arlington. A daughter, Eleanor, was born to this union.

The couple made their home on farms in Fayette County and eventually bought a farm in rural Westgate. Jesse and Esther were the first farmers to introduce Finn sheep to Iowa. They were very knowledgeable and experienced in all aspects of sheep farming. Along with helping on the farm, Esther taught for many years. She taught in Maynard, Arlington, Hawkeye, Sumner and retired from Independence. Jesse died in May of 1993. Several years later, Esther moved to Waterloo.

Esther was a devout Republican and worked extensively to support the party. She enjoyed sewing, was an avid reader and writer, and was up to date on all current events. She was extremely social and involved with missionary work and enjoyed helping others. Esther was raised during the depression and it showed in the way she lived, making every penny count. She always said, "It is a sin to let any fruit or vegetable go unpicked."

Esther died at the age of 95 on Monday, May 27, 2013 at the Affinity House in Waterloo.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Tamie (Dr. Jerry) Stahl, Dean (Wendy) Richardson, Darrell (Donna) Richardson, Kristy (Jeff) Cain and Daivd (Jodi) Richardson; great grandchildren, Dr. Brooke (Jason) Wiener, Britania (Brent) Perkins, Breanna (Chris) Brecher, MacKenzie Cain, Courtney Richardson, Somer (Edgar) Ruiz and Dylan Richardson; great great grandchildren, Cydnie, Paisy, Austin, Paige, Nolan, Maci, Christopher, Tomas and one more on the way, Baby Brecher; two sisters, Marjorie Cass and Marian Terrell; and a son in law, Ed Marker.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Ruth; a brother, Earl; a daughter, Eleanor; a grandson, Deland; a great grandson, Jeremy; and an ex son in law, Leland Richardson.

Esther will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
