A farmer, he was the son of Albert Gooch and Miss Lee, both of Amherst County, VA. He shares a stone with Sally Ann Gooch. Some information from death certificate # 16972, which lists his middle initial as "L".

From The Virginian Review, 90 Years Ago, page 4, July 6, 2019:

"James Gibson [sic] Gooch, gallant old soldier of the Southern Confederacy, died in Covington last night.

During the Civil War, Mr. Gooch served under General George Washington Custis Lee, a son of the great Commander of the Southern Army.

When his funeral takes place Sunday at 2:30, a firing squad and Acting Bugler Judy will do the honors at the grave, firing three volleys and sounding taps.
