DEACON HERRICK DEAD - The Oldest Deacon of the First Congregational Church drops Suddenly with Apoplexy and Dies - A Resident since 1838.

The information circulated yesterday that Deacon Ephraim A. Herrick was dead was a surprise to his many friends. The deceased was in his usual health Saturday evening when the alarm of fire was given. With his wife and daughter, Mr. Herrick stepped out of their house and stood watching the fire until they became chilly. They then went into the house, and Mrs. Herrick proposed going into the parlor, from the windows of which the fire could be seen. he wife and daughter entered that room and Mr. Herrick started to follow them. They heard a fall I the sitting room and turning back found they could not open the door into the sitting room. Hastening around the house they obtained entrance and found Mr. Herrick on the floor against the door. His daughter tried to raise him and asked him if he was hurt. He said he was not hurt and told her let lie and he would get up soon. Supposing her father was faint a frequent occurrence with him, she got the camphor bottle and held it to his nostrils. Mr. Herrick waved it away and then sank into insensibility, from which he never rallied. Dr. Clark was summoned and pronounced him suffering from apoplexy. Death came at 11:20 p.m.

Mr. Herrick was born in Andover, Mass., April 27, 1817, and is the oldest son in a family of nine, six sons and three daughters. He came to Rockford in May, 1888, and obtained a patent from the government for the land on which his residence stands and where he has lived for nearly fifty years, following the occupation of a farmer.

The deceased joined the First Congregational Church by letter in 1880. While this church was holding it services on the West Side he was elected deacon, an office he has held ever since, a period of nearly 40 years. He was a man of unblemished Christian character. He had expressed himself as ready to die and had often thought his death would be sudden.

He leaves a wife and daughter, Miss Alice Herrick, who lives with her parents. Four brothers and two sisters of the deceased are living. George, a farmer of this town; E.L., the butcher; Samuel, of this city, and Edward Herrick, living in Newell, Ia., and the sisters, Martha and Hannah Herrick also live here.

The funeral will be held at the residence tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. The decease belonged to the Old Settlers' Society and a large number of members will attend the obsequies. The house is about a half mile east in the town of Rockford.
