Robin Massengill served in Company K, 30th Regiment, North Carolina State Troops. He was captured in 1864 and spent the remainder of the war in Elmira Prison Camp, Elmira, New York. When he arrived home in late 1865, he was so consumed by lice that he bathed outside in hot water. His oldest son had to burn what was left of his uniform, which was more a lot of rags held together by what ever means available. Once he was bathed and clothed, Sallie allowed him in the house.
