Grand Island resident, 84
GRAND ISLAND - Francis "Vern" Hawkins, 84, of Grand Island died Monday, May 27, 2013, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Ravenna with the Rev. Martin Egging officiating. Burial will be at Westlawn Cemetery in Grand Island. Rasmussen Funeral Home in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
He was born July 16, 1928, in Mason City to Howard and Eva (Amsberry) Hawkins.
On Dec. 30, 1967, he married Sallymae (Stenka) Baker in Ravenna. She died in 1998.
Survivors include his stepchildren, Donald Baker of Columbus, Larry Baker of Grand Island, Rick Baker of Anna, Texas, Delores Slobaszewski of Rockville and Jane Wagner of Texas; nieces, Alta Kramer and her husband, Barry, and Jana Fread; nephews, Craig Fread and his wife, Kristi, and Curt Fread and his wife, Renee; three grandnieces; and two grandnephews.
He graduated from Mason City High School in 1946. He served in the U.S. Army's 37th Infantry Division during the Korean War.
He and Sallymae moved to Grand Island in 1970.
After serving in the Army, Vern drove a truck for Harry Haller and Vernon Rhode and hauled cattle from the Midwest to destinations such as Chicago, New York City and Mexico. He later worked for Missouri Valley Construction during the construction of Interstate 80 in Nebraska.
After his retirement, he worked as custodian and groundskeeper at Grand Island Catholic High School. He worked part time at the school until summer 2012.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island, a member of the American Legion for 56 years and a member of Post 53 in Grand Island.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. .
