Fred held many personal interests, including, boating, scuba diving, judo, motorcycle riding and most especially aircraft piloting. He was a self-taught "shade tree" mechanic, an avid American history buff, and loved old cars, hunting and fishing. He enjoyed radio controlled airplanes, never encountered an electronic device that he couldn't repair, and was an all-around "I wonder how that works" tinkerer.
Fred had a strong sense of patriotism which was no doubt bolstered during his 20 years of service in the United States Air Force; a career which afforded him extensive travel and challenge. He excelled in both electronics and missile sighting, while his wife Ruth excelled in "packing up and moving"; during one period, living in 13 different states within 12 years.
Immediately after retiring from the Air Force, Fred began his second career in electronics, as a Broadcast Maintenance Engineer with public broadcast television station KCET in Hollywood, CA. It was during this career that Fred underwent emergency brain tumor surgery and was subsequently diagnosed with COPD. Against all odds, Fred survived the surgery and all of its secondary treatments, rehabilitating far beyond doctor's predictions, and soon returned to work to finish his career.
Having spent so much of their lives "away from home", Fred & Ruth knew firsthand how hard that could be on a person, and made a point of opening their home to others who were away from their families at any given time. Many holidays and average days alike, were spent making a "home away from home" for others, and many lifelong friendships were developed. Fred loved to mentor young men and women, and practiced this "pay it forward" philosophy throughout his lifetime.
Today we celebrate the life of Fred Allen Newton, a man who asked for little, but gave endlessly, and is at rest and with the Lord.
