Jack Dempsey Akers, 85, of Enterprise, passed away at 9:33 p.m. Tuesday (May 21, 2013) at his sons's residence.
He was born in Bedford, Va., Jan. 2, 1928, a son of the late Eddie Griffin and Lillie Craig Akers. On Sept. 12, 1947, he married Margaret Lawlis Akers, who preceded him in death on Feb. 26, 2008.
Surviving are five sons, Roy Akers and his wife Judy of Laurel Run, Jack D. Akers Jr. and his wife Kim of Plano, Texas, Thomas Lee Akers of Laurel Run, Willie P. Akers of Enterprise, and Stacey Akers and his wife Shelley of Cincinnati; one daughter, Reberta McIntire of Laurel Run; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Willie Akers and James Akers, and two sisters, Ruby Smith and Ruth Vandenberg.
Jack was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He retired from the coal mines with 40 years service. He loved to fish.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Enterprise, with Rev. Adam Boyd officiating. Condolences may be extended to the family at www.perinefunerals.com. The Perine Funeral Home is honored to serve the Akers family.
