His mother died when he was five years old and he went to live with his grandmother, where he made his home until his marriage. He was thus deprived of the love and care of a mother in the formative years. He married Susan Kerr at Bloomberg, Pa., Nov. 11, 1861, and they lived together in happy fellowship for 54 years, 10 months and 21 days. Thirteen children were born to the union, six of whom passed before him to the life beyond.
The surviving children are Thomas Franklin Hartman, of Perry, Okla.; Aggie B. Leppard and Maggie Leppard, of Cottage Hill, Kan.; Chas. W. Hartman, of West Australia; Ed M. Hartman, of Ponca City, Okla.; Mrs. Grace G. Fundis, of LeRoy, Kan.; and Harry M. Hartman, of Waterville, Kan.
In 1869 his father and the Thomas families moved to Kansas and settled on adjoining homesteads in Cottage Hill township.
