Melvin was born in Ft. Worth, TX on Thanksgiving Day and shortly after moved to Dallas. His loving parents devoted their lives to him and his nine siblings. Surviving a very serious illness as a child was an example of his strong will and character. He lived in Texas throughout his life except for time spent in France and Germany while serving in the United States Army. He attended Adamson High School, U.T. Arlington, and North Texas State University. After finishing 18 years with the City of Dallas, he enjoyed his retirement serving the Lord, serving two missions with his wife for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and working as an ordinance worker in the Dallas Temple for 26 years.
Melvin is survived by his wife of 43 years Elise Smith, son Richard (& Patti) Smith of UT and daughters Kathryn (& Robert) Noe of LA, Kimberly (& Bill) Brock, Debora Yeats (& Dean Peters), Elizabeth (& Troy) Stepp, Naomi (& Dennis) Pease, Patricia (& Terry) Higginbotham, and Sarah (& Joseph) Contreras all of TX, his brother Dennis (& Juanita) Smith of AZ, his sisters Linda (& Guy) Colby of TX, and Nancy (& Leroy) Pectol of UT, and 28 grand children, 29 great-grand children and 9 great-great grand children.
