He served in the U.S. Army earning the World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Service Medal and the Occupation Ribbon Japan and was a member of Queen Street Missionary Baptist Church in Beaufort.
He is survived by his wife, Susie Ellison Mayers of the home; four sons, Edward Mayers, Richard Mayers of Newark, N.J., Thaddeus Mayers, Orange Park, Fla., and Brian Mayers of Fayetteville; one daughter, Roxanne Mayers of the home; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-granchildren.
