Joseph Chastain served as 1st Lieutenant of Company C (Acworth Grays), 7th Georgia Infantry (State Guards). His service record shows that he enrolled July 29, 1863 at Acworth GA, for 6 months. He was age 61, 5 ft. 10 in., dark complexion, gray hair, born in Pendleton SC, occupation: farmer. He was listed as present on the muster rolls dated Dec. 31, 1863 and Jan. 31, 1864, at which time the company disbanded, its term of service having expired.
A suggested change in death date is based on two sources: (1) US Fed Census Mortality Schedule, 1850-1885, states Joseph Chastain died in Dec 1879; (2) Petition for Letters of Administration filed by E. C. Stansel in Cobb Co GA dated 20 Feb 1880 stated Joseph Chastain died 5 Dec 1879.
