His first marriage was to Paulina Tille on 26 Jan 1879, Ev. Lutheran Church of Saint James, Cook, Illinois officated by Wm. Bartling, Pastor. His children from this marriage were Olga Lutter, Clara Lutter, Walter B Lutter, Adolph C Lutter, Frederick M Lutter, Henry W Lutter,and Alfred W Lutter. His wife Paulina Tille Lutter died 30 Jan 1896 just days after her son Alfred was born. Henry J married a second time on 4 Sep 1897, Cook, Illinois to Marie Moutin. She was also known as Mary. To this union Elmer W Lutter and Florence J Lutter were born. Marie raised Alfred W as her son. Marie Moutin was born 20 Mar 1863 in Germany and died 15 Jul 1937. She was interred in Graceland Cemetery.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his sons Henry W, Walter B, Adolph C, Fred M, Alfred W and two daughters Olga (Mrs Fred C) Eilers and Florence (Mrs. Theodore) Mueller. Services were held in St. Luke's Lutheran church. Interment in Graceland Cemetery.
