Pneumonia End Life of Catholic Church Pastor
The Rev. James J. Flaherty, pastor of the Church of the Nativity of
Our Lord, 37th and Union Streets, died yesterday of pneumonia. He
had been sick only a few days.
Father Flaherty was born at Peru, Illinois, in 1853. He was educated for the priesthood at
Niagara Falls. He was ordained in 1879 and received his first appointment as assistant pastor
of the church in which he ended his labors. From there he was sent to St. Patrick's on the west side and later to the Annunciation Church. In 1885, he was promoted to the rank of pastor and took charge of St. James' Parish in Rockford.
Archbishop Quigley brought him back to Chicago in 1907 and made him pastor of the Church
of the Nativity, to succeed Father J. M Cantan.
Father Flaherty is survived by a sister, Mrs. Ellen Hurley.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 o'clock Tuesday morning at the
Church of the Nativity. His burial will be at LaSalle.
