Florence Whelan, 95, died on Memorial Day in Santa Cruz, Calif.
Born Florence Otis in Butte, she was a teacher before moving to San Francisco in the late 1940s. She was always proud of her Irish, Butte heritage. Florence married Frank Whelan of Butte in 1955. She worked 35 years for the state of California as an employment counselor in San Francisco.
Florence was an active member of the St. Gabriel's Catholic Church and a charter member of the United Irish Cultural Center in San Francisco.
She is survived by her nephews, Jim and Jack Otis and their families; the Jack Whelan family of Butte, Mary Lou Olson, Kathleen and Ed Janney, Jeanne Ellis, Larry and Barbara Whelan, Betty and Charlene Merrifield, Peggy and Jim Maloney, and Donna and Ted Furshong.
She was a sweet lady who will be missed by all who knew her.
Florence will be buried with her late husband Frank at the Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery in Los Altos, Calif.
