John Upphoff, 79, Dies

A Fairfield man, John E. Upphoff, 79, who for years directed the operation of every F.W. Woolworth Co., store on the West Coast, died Friday at Fairfield Memorial Hospital.

He and his wife, the former Pearl Vaughan, a native of Wayne county, made their home at 15 Park Lane here.

Mr. Upphoff had been in declining health for some time and had spent much of recent months under doctor's care in the hospitals.

Rites Sunday

The remains were moved to Johnson's Funeral Home here where private services were held Sunday afternoon, with Rev. Don Tabor officiating. Later the remains were cremated in St. Louis and will be placed in the Mountain View Columbarium in Oakland, Calif.

Mr. Upphoff was born in San Francisco May 14, 1904. He attended school in Alameda, Calif., college at the University of California and Princeton.

He started his long career with Woolworth in Oakland in 1924, retiring after 43 years on Dec. 31, 1967. He managed Woolworth stores in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Long Beach and was regional manager for Woolworth's six states of the Pacific Coast Division at the time.

In the Air Force

He served as a major in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1945 during World War II and was a pilot in the Air Force Flying Command and 9th Service Command.

It was in 1953 that Mr. Upphoff was married to Pearl Vaughan in Piedmont, Calif.

Mr. Upphoff was a member of the Elks Club in Alameda, Calif.; a Mason and member of the Scottish Rite and Shrine. He was a member of the Wayne County Shrine Club, a former Rotarian, an Optimist, past associate patron of the Eastern Star and a holder of the Legion of Honor.

Mrs. Upphoff will continue to make her home in Fairfield, near her niece, Mrs. Barbara Milner.
