Emmet Wayland Golden was the youngest son of Jonathan Robert and Martha Ann Columbia Martin Golden. He was born in Knox County, Missouri, likely in the Colony area. He was one of fifteen known chilren including: James, George William, William Porter, Jedidiah Waldo, James Flave, Charles Albert, and Wilson B. (all half-brothers), Sarah J, Margaret S. On March 20, 1902, he married Eva Nancy Krammes in Dunn County, Wisconsin. To this union, two children were born Elzie Lavern and Elva Elaine Golden.

Wayland loved to travel. According to his family, he came and went on a moment's notice. He is known to have lived in Missouri, Wisconsin, California, Montana and is known to have homesteaded in Hugo, Colorado.
