Gene married Evelyn Thompson who died in 2001. Gene married Virginia Doty in 2008 and was survived by her and stepsons John Wayne and Carolyn Avery, and Larry Bruce and Sue Avery plus 15 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
