While living in Pocatello she studied piano under Marrietta Sprague. She continued her musical studies in Salt Lake City as well as in New York. She earned he B.A. and M.A. from the University of Utah and taught at the McCune School of Music and Art in Salt Lake City, Utah.
In 1937 she moved to New York City where she obtained a Ph.D. in music education from Columbia University and joined the faculty of Queens College. While living in New York she performed in many concerts and radio programs.
In 1946 she married Harold Freeze Folland and began teaching at the University of Utah. She continued her career while raising their son Gerald and retired as a full professor in 1976. One of her greatest rewards came from the lasting friendships that she made with her students.
