Halsey was a student at Harvard University from 1899-1901. He received a prestigious Price Greenleaf scholarship. He compiled a History and Genealogy of the Borthwick Family, which was published in 1903. In the 1936 update to the The Borthwick Family, a genealogy compilation that Halsey originally wrote, William S. Borthwick wrote, "Disease terminated the life of an especially fine young man of promise."
