I am a direct descendant and have researched this a lot. Elizabeth Ferry (or Ferre) was Denison Gates' first wife and she died in 1840. Elizabeth Berry was his second wife. The surname similarity is coincidence.
MORE NOTES: Denison Gates married two wives, both named Elizabeth. The first wife, Elizbeth Ferre, died in 1840 before this child (Henry Walton Gates) was born. He should attach as a child to the second wife, Elizabeth Berry.
