Australian Prime Minister. Born in Bathurst, New South Wales this railway engineer became one of Australia's most respected Prime Ministers. The Labor Party Leader, was Treasurer during World War II where he helped develop the nation's income tax system and after the war, led the way in the transition from a war time to a peace time economy. He became Prime Minister, in 1945, four weeks before the war's end and focused his attention on building a strong post-war economy. His policies helped keep the jobless rate below one percent even though thousands of troops were returing home looking for work. He also supported an immigration plan that encouraged British migrants to supplement the Australian population which he felt would insure Australia's security from future threats. However his call for a more centralized government, post -war rationing of gas and the establishment of a national bank system proved to be increasingly unpopular and he lost his seat in 1949. He remained acitve in Parliament until his death in 1951.
