He was born in Watauga County January 14, 1929, to Joe Edward Welch and Narlie Miller Triplett. He was owner of Welch Lumber.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Edith Todd Welch, one daughter, one son, two grandsons, his step-father, Glenn Triplett, one half-brother and one half-sister.
Services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Reverends Pete Vannoy and Roscoe Greene. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.
