Son of Christian Sensenig Burkhart and Mary Ann Weaver. Married Anna Rebecca Miller, daughter of Joel Miller and Catherine Christopel, on 31 Dec 1887 in Elkhart County, Indiana. Father of Irvin Franklin Burkhart, Myrtle Viola (Burkhart) Wieand, Mary Ellen Burkhart, Ora Royal Burkhart, Katie Matrona (Burkhart) Loucks, Ethel Amelia (Burkhart) Stong, Lester Harold Burkhart, Samuel Wilson Burkhart, Anna Mildred (Burkhart) Long, and Paul Leon Burkhart.
In March of 1894 they migrated with a large colony to Towner County. Samuel was one of the founders of the Zion Church of the Brethren. In June of 1894, their daughter Mary Ellen was the first to be buried in this cemtery.
