The son of Prentice and Betsey Billings.

Alexander married Abigail K. Pratt of Grafton, MA at Grafton on Jan. 30, 1839. They were the parents of at least one child, Eliza A., born in 1842.

Alexander was a 44 year-old Machinist from Sutton, when he enlisted at South Scituate, MA on July 1, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Private in Co. G. He contracted Small Pox on or about March 1, 1862 and was admitted to Seminary Hospital, Georgetown, DC shortly after. He was discharged due to disability at Georgetown, Washington, DC on April 19, 1862.

Alexander died of the effects of small pox at Sutton, MA on Aug. 21, 1863.
