Martha was the daughter of Nicholas Qualls and Luvinia M. (Cross) Patterson. She married Charles Lyman Vickers in January 1875 in Texas. He was a cowboy who was working for her father on the Patterson Ranch. She died giving birth to their first child, Giles Wade Nicholas Vickers, in Kimble County, Texas.
