Graduate of U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1834 (17). Bvt. Second Lieut., 3d Infantry, July 1, 1834.
Served: on Topographical duty, July 17, 1834, to Oct. 15, 1836;
(Second Lieut., 3d Infantry, May 31, 1835)
and on frontier duty at Ft. Jesup, La., 1836‑37.
Resigned, Aug. 25, 1837.

He became the third superintendent of the Dahlonega Mint in 1843 and remained in the position until 1849.

He served briefly (May 31-Dec. 6, 1861) in the Confederate Army in 7th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.

He worked as an Engineer and Surveyor at Atlanta, Ga., 1866‑69.

His father was Thomas Abthorpe Cooper, the leading American stage actor of his day; his mother belonged to the socially prominent Fairlie family of New York but had run off to become an actress. His sister married Robert Tyler, son of the President, and served as First Lady after the death of the President's wife.
