Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church in Sturgis for Walter W. Hardy, father of Dale Hardy of Spearfish. Mr. Hardy died Friday at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Kinkade Funeral Chapel of Sturgis was in charge of arrangements.
Hardy was born at Alkali Divide Oct. 4, 1902, the son of William and Elizabeth Hardy. He attended rural schools and lived on Alkali Divide until 1924. On Oct. 15, 1923, he was married to Hazel Veren at Sturgis. They moved to Sturgis in 1934. He operated a tire shop and gas station until 1948 when they moved to Yuma, Ariz. In 1951 he returned to the area and was engaged in ranching until 1964 when they moved to Sturgis.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge, Western Dakota Antique Club, Sturgis Senior Citizens, South Dakota Trappers Association and Rockhound Club.
In addition to his son, Dale, he is survived by his wife, Hazel, another son, Carroll Hardy of Boulder, Colo.; a daughter, Janice Hardy of Denver, Colo.; one brother, Roy Hardy, Sturgis; and three sisters, Lucille Keffeler, Laura Casteel and Charlotte Ricard, all of Sturgis; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established to the First Presbyterian Church and the Western Dakota Antique Club.
