HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — Mary Ann Bates, nee Pape, 81, of Hot Springs, Ark., formerly of Princeton, left this earth to be with her Lord on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, after a brief illness.

Born in Evanston, she retired from AT&T, most years she lived in Carol Stream, then Princeton, where she supervised food service for seniors until she was 79 years old. She moved from Illinois in November 2012 and attended Bismarck Baptist Church before moving to Garrett Manor in Hot Springs, Ark., where she enjoyed three months in independent living and quickly made friends.

While living in Princeton, she and her husband were very active with helping the elderly in Princeton, serving meals and organizing a senior group through St. Louis Catholic Church. She was instrumental in putting together a group cookbook through the church and also in getting the caboose at Darius Miller Park lit during the holidays for the entire town to enjoy. She attended St. Louis Catholic Church in Princeton.

Mary is survived by her husband, John, of 61 years; five children, Joe Bates and wife, Martina, of Yorkville, Marianne Allensworth and husband, Jerry, of Bismarck, John J. Bates and wife, Karen, of Naperville, Catherine Terpstra and husband, Ed, of Carol Stream, and Karl Bates and wife, Sharon, of Naperville; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Elizabeth Saum of Evansville, Ind.; 14 nieces and nephews; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn and Henrietta; and two grandchildren, Justin and Lisa.

She was greatly loved and will be missed all our days until we see her again.

A visitation will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of service at noon at the Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton. Interment will be private.

Memorial gifts may be directed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105
