Billy J. Abell, 89, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 3:15 p.m., Saturday, May 11th, while in the company of family members, at Cedars Ridge 807, McPherson, Kansas.
Billy was born in Josephine, Texas on January 4, 1924, the son of Frances Jane (Morrison) and James Blueford Abell.
Billy attended the Josephine grade schools and graduated from Josephine High School, Josephine, Texas.
Billy was a member of New Gottland Covenant Church McPherson, Kansas where he served his church in many capacities through the years. He was a former member of the First United Methodist Church, Josephine, Texas.
Billy honorably served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a Sgt in WW II. He received the American Theater Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and W.W.II Victory Medal.
After the war, Billy started working for Southern Air Craft in Garland, Texas until September of 1946 when he came to McPherson to visit a W.W.II buddy and began working for K.P.&L. in McPherson, Kansas. He worked for the United States Post Office in Dallas, Texas prior to moving back to McPherson when he started in August 26, 1957 for N.C.R.A. where he was known as "Tex" and worked until December of 1986 when he retired.
Billy was a member of the Masonic Lodge 586 of Nevada, Texas.
Billy Joe Abell was united in marriage to Lucille Helen Clark on on January 18, 1948 at New Gottland Covenant Church, rural McPherson, Kansas. Lucille died on July 20, 2002, they were married at
Surviving family members include his children, Carol Forster and her husband Steve, of Allen, Texas, Douglas Abell and his wife Sheri L., of Las Vegas, Nevada and Gary Abell and his wife Sheri S., of McPherson, Kansas; his sister, Reba Abell, of Farmersville, Texas; his 7 Grandchildren, Wade Forster, Lindsay Lamb and husband David, Dayna Karas and husband Scott, Darrell Abell, and Preston Abell, Karley Clark and husband Andrew and Clayton Abell; his 7 Great-grandchildren - Emma and Ella Lamb, Morgan and Parker Karas, Joseph "Joey", Ava, and Elaina Clark; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Billy was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Lucille; brothers Autrea, Doyle, Ralph, Cleatis, James L., and Bobby Lee Abell; and sisters, Eufula Bost, Ruby Jean Bryant, and Dorris Lynch;

Funeral service will be held at New Gottland Covenant Church, McPherson, Kansas, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 18th, with Reverend Richard Skar officiating.
The final resting place will be at the New Gottland Lutheran Church Cemetery McPherson, Kansas with members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715 and American Legion Post 2715 providing military honors.
