Mary's mother Elizabeth remarried on December 29, 1841 in Jefferson County, Ohio to John Sarbaugh. In 1852 the Sarbaughs moved to Clayton County, Iowa, and in 1853 they settled in Allamakee County, Iowa where Elizabeth's siblings were living. Her sons with Samuel Denning, William, Samuel Jr., and James remained in the area of Allamakee County. The other son John Denning with his family, and his sisters, Maria, Mrs. Joseph McCorkle, Sarah, Mrs. John Deremo, and Mary Jane, Mrs. Charles Miner, moved to the western portions of Iowa.
