Richard Benevento, Sr., of Penn Valley, CA, held on Thursday, 5/26/2005, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, in Grass Valley. Mass of Christian burial held on Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Grass Valley. Father Tim Nondorf officiated. Burial at Sierra Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Nevada City.

Mr. Benevento passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2005, in Grass Valley, CA, age 83. He was born August 17, 1921, in San Jose, CA, to Frank and Victoria Benevento, the first of six children. He graduated from Campbell High School in 1939, as a CA Scholarship Federation President and went on to graduate with a B.S. from San Jose State University with honors in 1943. Following graduation he signed up for the V7 Program at Northwestern University to become an officer in the U.S. Navy. He graduated No. 16 academically and No. 1 physically. He served in the U.S. Navy as a commanding officer.

He married Marie on June 5, 1949. He was secretary for the Teamsters Union Local 679 for over 37 years. He was a member and board of director of the San Jose YMCA. He had been a workout fanatic his entire life, and had entered several body building contests and won Mr. Pismo Beach. He enjoyed weight lifting, body building, running and being a rancher.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marie C. Benevento of Penn Valley; sons and daughters-in-law Richard Victor Benevento Jr., and JoAnn Marie Benevento of Penn Valley, and John Frank and Denise Renee Benevento of Penn Valley; grandchildren Sophia, John Jr., Richard, Francesca, and Joseph Benevento; brothers Joe and Frank Benevento; sisters Florence Johnson, Lena Barbaccia, and Eva Antonio; brothers-in-law John R. Carvella, Cy Barbaccia, and Stan Antonio; and sister-in-law, Barbara Caravella.
