William V Finch was the second son and youngest child of Mary Gertrude Finch Chapman and George Raley Finch. He was born in St. Paul, MN and raised with two sisters, Nellie (1871) and Helen G (1872) and an older brother, George Chapman Finch (1875 to 1943).

The 1900 Census document shows William living at 245 Summit with his father, George Raley, his mother, Mary Gertrude Finch, his brother George, his sister, Nellie, a boarder and three servants.

The 1910 Census shows William still living at 245 Summit Avenue with his father, George, his mother, Mary and his Mother's sister, Louise. His Brother, George, his sister, Nellie and two servants are also living with them. The census indicates that one servant was hired as a cook and the other hired to clean.

On Sept 12,1918, William filled out a draft registration card. On his card he put that his birthday was October 12, 1877 which conflicts with his gravestone. His draft card indicates that he was living at 245 Summit Avenue and that he was 40 years old. The draft card also indicates that he was a salesman and worked for Finch, VanSlyck and McConnille in the Park Square building in St. Paul, MN. William listed his sister Nellie as his nearest relative. His draft card also indicates that he was of medium height, slender build with blue eyes and gray hair.

In the 1920 Census, it shows William Van S Finch living on Summit Avenue with his sister, Helen G and his brother, George C and two servants. The census indicates that he is single and is 42 years of age and is working as a salesman for a Wholesale Dry Goods Company with his brother, George.

Sometime between 1920 and 1928, William married Anna R. and moved to 2032 Princeton Avenue in St. Paul as the 1928 City Directory shows them living there.

In the 1930 census, it shows William married to Anna at 52 years of age and working as a wholesale Merchandise Manager. At this time, William and Anna were living at 7037 Princeton Avenue in St. Paul, MN.

In 1932, William retired according to his death certificate.

The 1935 City Directory shows William and Anna living at 2032 Princeton Avenue again. Sometime between 1935 and his death in 1937, William and Anna were divorced as the death certificate indicates he was divorced. After his divorce, he moved back to the family home at 245 Summit Avenue with his brother, George and his sister, Helen.

William Van Slyck Finch died at Miller Hospital in St. Paul, MN from Cardio Vascular Renal Disease. At the time of his death, he also had a Bladder stone and Tabes Dorsalis disease which is a degenerative spine disease. William was 59 years, 9 months and 6 days old at the time of his death. His death certificate also indicates that he was born in 1877 which conflicts with his gravestone but agrees with his draft card which he filled out himself.

William was buried in Oakland Cemetery on Jackson Street in St. Paul, MN in the Finch family plot on July 20, 1937. He is buried by the big Finch Monument, with his mother and father, his sister, Helen, and his brother, George.
