CHESTER -- Paul L. Preusse Jr., 89, passed away at 4:20 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010, in Memorial Hospital in Chester. Paul was born to the late Paul L. and Emma (nee Welge) Preusse Sr. on Aug. 16, 1921, in Chester.
Paul married Naomi W. Stutts on Dec. 24, 1942, in Perryville, Mo.; she survives. Paul had been a licensed funeral director and embalmer for more than 50 years and was a partner in Welge Brothers Funeral Home and Home Furnishings in Chester, which his great-grandfather, Conrad Welge, started in 1882. Paul also had owned and operated Paul's Furniture Store in Ste. Genevieve, Mo., for many years. Paul was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Chester and was faithful in worship. He was an usher for many years and he had been the announcer for the Sunday service radio broadcast for more than 50 years. He was a member and past president of Chester Lions Clubs for more than 50 years and was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Award in 2001. He had been a member of St. John Lutheran School Board of Education, serving as president for one year. He had been member and past president of Chester Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of American Legion Post 487 in Chester. He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Medical Corps. Survivors include his wife, Naomi Preusse of Chester; two children, Susan (Don) Schopfer of Chicago and Philip (Tammy) Preusse of Atlanta; one brother, William (Gloria) Preusse of Port Washington, Wis.; four grandchildren, Dr. David Schopfer of Chicago, Mark (Amanda) Schopfer of Baltimore, Matthew Schopfer of New York and Clay Preusse of Atlanta. He was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Alma Alms. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 8, 2010, in St. John's Lutheran Church in Chester, with the Rev. Peter Ill officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today and from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at Pechacek-McClure Funeral Home in Chester and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Chester. Memorials may be made to St. John Radio Fund or St. John Lutheran Church.
