Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 13th Missouri Volunteer Infantry, then as a Captain in the 25th Missouri Volunteer Infantry, then as Colonel and commander of the 87th Missouri Enrolled Militia, then finally as Colonel and commander of the 44th Missouri Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant services during the war".
