Services for retired mechanic Ralph Clay Sloas, 73, of Buchanan, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at McEvoy Chapel.

Gary Collier will officiate, with burial to follow at Bethel Cemetery in Buchanan.

Visitation will include a birthday celebration from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, and after 10 a.m. Monday.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are his grandchildren: Jeannie Todd, Jennifer Benes and Brian Benes.

Sloas died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah.

His wife, Jean Willard Sloas, survives. The couple married on June 15, 1956.

He was born Sept. 20, 1935, in Jonesboro, Ark., to Thomas Harvey Sloas Sr. and Nealia Gray Sloas, both deceased.

An Air Force veteran, he retired from the trucking industry in the Chicago area, where he worked as a mechanic. A Baptist, he was an avid fisherman, antiques collector and trader of goods.

A family member said he was widely known, and never met a stranger.

He is survived by two daughters: Sondra (Norman) Bell of Burgaw, N.C.; and Laura Sloas and son-in-law Tom Benes of Warrenville, Ill.; a son: Michael Sloas of Chicago; a sister: Carol Gilmore of Missouri; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Wanda Denniston and Geraldine Surrena; and three brothers: Thomas Harvey "T.H." Sloas Jr., Willis Sloas and James A. Sloas.
