Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Born in Greenville, Virginia, at the start of the Civil war, he enlisted in 1861, as a Captain in the 25th Virginia Infantry. He fought at Rich Mountain and was cited for gallantry at Cedar Mountain and at the Second Manassas. Promoted Major, he was in command of the regiment at Sharpsburg and cited again at Gettysburg being promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1863. In 1864, he was at Mine Run, the Wilderness, Spottsylvania Court House and promoted Brigadier General. In July 1864, he was seriously wounded near Winchester, losing an arm and was given command of the reserve forces of the Valley District for the rest of the war. After the war, he served as financial agent at Lee College, Lexington, Virginia.
