OBITUARY SAMUEL HURFORD
Hardin County Independent, Elizabethtown, Illinois • Thursday, August 22, 1974, Page 6
Samuel Hurford, son of Jesse J Hurford and Lula Ann Hurford was born in Hardin County near Elizabethtown, Illinois May 10, 1892 and departed this life August 14, 1974 at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 4 days.
He was preceded in death by his father, his mother, two sisters and two brothers. He leaves to mourn his death four sisters; Mrs. Gertie Young of Colton, California; Mrs. Katie Boulden of Tucson, Arizona; Mrs. Helen Volkert and Mrs. Viola Asbell, both of Rosiclare. Illinois, and several nieces and nephews.
He was a veteran of World War I, and was for many years an active member of the American Legion. Many years ago he accepted Christ as his personal Savior and united himself with the Sycamore Social Brethren Church; he later transferred his membership to the United Methodist Church in Rosiclare where he remained a faithful member until his death.
He will be sadly missed by all; his friends, his relatives and those who had the good fortune to know him. His manner of living seemed to be in complete harmony with the thoughts expressed by the poet who said: "So live, that when thy summons comes to join the innumerable caravan that moves to that mysterious realm, where each shall take his chamber in the silent halls of death, thou go not, like the quarry slave at night, scourged to his dungeon, but sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him, and lies down to pleasant dreams."
He welcomed death as a release from his infirmities.
