David Hassenfeld, 77, of 310 Blackstone Blvd., a lawyer, died Saturday at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. He was the husband of Tess A. (Zwiebel) Hassenfeld.

Born in Poland, he was a son of the late Herman and Pessel (Laufer) Hassenfeld. He lived in Providence since 1920.

Mr. Hassenfeld was a 1935 graduate of Brown University, and graduate from Harvard Law School in 1938. He served as a sergeant in the Army Air Forces during World War II.

He maintained a law practice in Providence with emphasis on debtor/creditor law, and later specializing in bankruptcy law. In the early 1970s, he represented plaintiffs in the first class action law suit brought to Rhode Island. In the 1980s, he was a lawyer in plaintiff classes in three other law suits challenging credit practices of a number of Rhode Island banks as well as the City of Providence.

In 1988, the Rhode Island Bar Association honored him for 50 years of service. He was a member of the Rhode Island Trial Lawyers Association, and was honored by the Rhode Island Bar Association, and the Rhode Island Legal Services for participating in the volunteer lawyer program.

As president of the former Robinson Street Synagogue in 1954, he participated in the merger of four synagogues. The congregation was Shaare Zedek, Broad Street, of which he became president at that time. Mr.Hassenfeld was a member of the board of directors of the Providence Hebrew Day School, and served as chairman of the education committee and as legal counsel for the school.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Daniel Hassenfeld of Newton, Mass.; two daughters, Brenda R. Abramovich of Newton, Mass. and Joyce Y. Gomolin of Plainview, Long Island, N.Y., and six grandchildren.

The funeral service will be today at 3 p.m. at Mount Sinai Memorial Chapel, 825 Hope St. Burial will be in Lincoln Park Cemetery, Warwick.
