ALTUS NEWSPAPER

CITY YOUTH, 14 KILLED
AS CYCLE, TRAIN COLLIDE

By Larry Briscoe

An Altus youth was killed and another injured Tuesday afternoon when a motorcycle they were riding collided with a freight train.
VICTOR MORRIS CHAMBERS, 14, 504 Mars, was fatally injured when his 1970 cycle collided with a Frisco freight train on South Navajo at 4:20 P.M. Tuesday.
GLENN SELLS, 12, 808 Hazel, a passenger on the cycle, was injured in the accident. He was taken to Jackson County Memorial Hospital where he was reportedly treated and released for arm and leg injuries.
The accident occurred when CHAMBER'S northbound cycle hit the train moving west.
According to police reports, the cycle collided with the train about 18 feet from the front of the engine.
The cycle was reported to have skidded 42 feet before falling to its side and skidding an additional 32 feet before hitting the engine.
SELLS fell from the cycle before the impact.
Both of the boys were reported to have been wearing crash helmets.
CHAMBERS, son of MR. and MRS. WILLIS R. (BUD) CHAMBERS, was born in Altus March 12, 1956.
He was an eight-grade student at Southeast Junior High School.
Services will be held at the Southside Baptist Church at 2 P.M. Thursday with the Rev. Ron Ledbetter and the Rev. Bill Davis officiating. Funeral arrangements are being made by Tim's Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Altus Cemetery.
Other survivors include: a brother of the home, ROBERT OWEN; a sister, also of the home, La DANA BEE; grandparents, MR. and MRS. O. S. CHAMBERS, Altus and MR. and MRS. VICTOR STONE, Oklahoma City; and great grandparents, MR. and MRS. GEORGE WICKER, Blair.
The Southeast student body this morning took up a collection for the youth's family. Donnie Connell, principal, said the children gave $33 which will be used to buy a wreath and food to be sent to the family.
He said several items of food have been taken to the parents home. The Roosevelt PTA today also was preparing food for relatives gathering for the funeral.
