On the 1880 Buffalo, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found John J. Paxton, 61; wife Eliza J. Paxton, 48; Daughters: "Kate" Paxton, 25; Laura L. Paxton, 15 and Emma J. Paxton, 13, all VA born.
On the 1900 Buffalo, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found widow and farmer Eliza J. Paxton, 66, Apr 1834, had 6 kids, 3 living and was residing with (relation - "none") Thomas Miley, 13, Aug 1887 and cook Ellen Dawson, 35, Mar 1865, plus 2 servants, Henry W. Beecher, 6 and Finnie Felton, 8, all VA born.
Eliza J. Layne and a John Gordon Paxton are mentioned in Floyd Benjamin Layne's book, Layne-Lain-Lane Genealogy, the Bookman Press,1962, p 145.
