William Mitchell, son of Joab and Mary Mitchell lived in Hawkins Co.Tenn. At an early age married a daughter of Joel Dyer and moved to Middle Tenn.

He was Capt. of a company of Volunteers under Gen.Jackson in the Creek War and was in the Battle of Taellushatchee, Taledega, Theaupeki Emer and Horse Shoe. He was at the taking of Pensacola twice under Gen. Jackson. He was a Major of the Reg. of Tenn. Volunteers commanded by Col. Robert Dyer and was in the celebrated night attack on the British lines below New Orleans the 23rd day of December 1814 under Gen. Coffee and was in the memorable battle of the 8th June 1815 commonly called the Battle of New Orleans,where the British lost more than 2000 men, a great many wounded and missing and the American loss was 7 wounded and 6 killed.

He was a Lt.Col. in the War with the Seminole Indians in Fl. In 1818, was at the taking of Pensacola in 1818 and at the execution of Arbuthyat and Ambrister, the English spies caught in said war. He died in Sparta Tenn.
