H. R. Oyan, Choral Music Director

By S. Joseph Hagenmayer, INQUIRER CORRESPONDENTPOSTED: August 05, 1993 Harold R. Oyan, 74, whose legacy as a high school music teacher was the founding of the All-Shore Chorus in 1963, died Monday at the Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank.

A Rumson resident, Mr. Oyan was the choral music director at Long Branch High School in Ocean County from 1962 to 1980 when he retired. Before that, he had lived in Pennsauken and had been the choral music director at Merchantville High School.

The All-Shore Chorus was intended to inspire Shore-area high school students to musical excellence, said his son Gerald Bruce Oyan of Koteweiler- Schwanden, Germany.

"When my father moved to Rumson, he found Shore area high schools were very under-represented on the all-state music groups, and decided to create a regional group that would promote music and musical excellence," said his son.

Mr. Oyan's high school teaching career was an outgrowth of his faith and its expression as a Christian.

Born in Werner, N.D., Mr. Oyan graduated from Jamestown College in North Dakota in 1940 with a degree in history. Before World War II, he worked for the Army Corps of Engineers in Alaska, where he met two missionaries who gave him the idea that he could lead a Christian life as a Christian minister of music.

When World War II began, he served in the Navy. After the war, he enrolled in Westminster Choir College in Princeton and received his bachelor's degree in music in 1949 and a master's degree in music in 1950.

While living in Pennsauken, Mr. Oyan was the minister of music and director of Christian education at the First Presbyterian Church of Merchantville. When he moved to Rumson, he served as minister of music at the First Presbyterian Church of Freehold. He was an elder, deacon and choir member of the First Presbyterian Church of Red Bank at Tower Hill.

Mr. Oyan also was choir director of the Catholic and Protestant Fort Monmouth Chapel in Eatontown, founder and a former director of the Fort Monmouth Choral Society and a member of the Shrewsbury Chorale.

In addition to his son Gerald, Mr. Oyan is survived by his wife, Doris Schaufele Oyan; five grandchildren, and a sister, Ocie Sheets of Fort Wayne, Ind. His son John Arthur died last year.

A funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. today at the First Presbyterian Church of Red Bank at Tower Hill, Harding Avenue, Red Bank. Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow in the Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Arneytown.
