John, the son of Chester A. Carey and Dorothy E. Carey (deceased) of Gardners PA, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on October 18, 1966 in New Cumberland PA. He arrived in Vietnam on February 1, 1968 and was assigned for duty with Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On February 13, while establishing a squad ambush site in the vicinity of the Dong Bich village complex in Hieu Duc District of Quang Nam Province a wire was tripped detonating an AP (Anti-Personnel) mine believed to have been an M26AI grenade which killed LCpl Carey as a result of fragmentation wound and wounded PFC Andrew who was evacuated.
