Dexter Merritt Camp.
Dexter Merritt Camp was born on September 14, 1832, in Pownal, Vermont. He was married to Lucy A. Sweet in 1854. Th this union were born eight children, of whom five survive.
He moved to Illinois in 1856 and in 1861 enlisted in Co., C, 47th Illinois Infantry, and was honorably discharged after a service of three years, five months and two days. His first wife died, Jan. 3rd, 1874. On September 20th of the same year, he married Mrs. Jennie O. Keyes. Five of eight children survive this union.
Mr. Camp came to Kansas in 1876 and resided here until 1900, when he moved to Oklahoma. Seven years ago, he list his wife, who is interred in Browns Grove Cemetery. Since her death he has been residing with his children. He passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edna Webster.
Ten children remain to mourn his loss: Merritt Camp of Wright, Kan.; Mrs. Wm. Morti of Leon, Kan.; Mrs. Olive Fenshul of Baker, Ore.; Mrs. A.M. Foreman of Malton, Wash.; Charles Camp of Wichita; John George and Joe camp of Cherokee, Okla.; Mrs. M.O. Webster and Mrs. H.L. Webster of Rozel. There also remain 81 grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted from the M.E. Church at Burdett, Rev. Ruff officiating. A large company was in attendance, although the roads were bad. A good choir sang. The floral offering was beautiful. The remains were interred beside the wife in Browns Grove Cemetery. Six soldiers were chosen bearers of the pall.
