Wilma was the daughter of H. William Otto and Marie Finnern. She married Robert Barels on November 17, 1938 in Carroll, Iowa. They were the parents of Becky and Penny

Sept 22, 1975 - Carroll Daily Times - Mrs. Robert F. Barels, 59, wife of a Carroll dentist, died at St. Anthony Regional Hospital at 9:20 p.m. Saturday after a long illness. She was a lifelong resident of Carroll. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Allan M. Peterson officiating. Interment will be in the Carroll City Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Monday at the Dahn-Woodhouse Funeral Home. The casket will be moved to the church at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Mrs. Barels was the former Wilma Dorothy Otto, daughter of H.W. and Marie Augusta Finnern. She was born at Carroll Oct. 1, 1915 and was a graduate of Carroll High School. She received a B.S. degree in commerce from the University of Iowa in 1937 and in 1937 and 1938 was employed by Montgomery Ward Company.

On Nov. 17, 1938 she married Dr. Barels at the Presbyterian Church in Carroll, with the Rev. William Yingling officiating at the ceremony. The family home is at 1226 North Main Street.

Surviving with her husband are two daughters: Mrs. James (Rebecca) Drahovzal of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Mrs. Gordon (Penelope) Wade of Carroll; four grandchildren; two sisters: Mrs. Byron (Flora) Mueller of LaHarpe, Illinois, and Mrs. Stuart (Harriet) Paterson of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; and a brother, Walter Otto of Sac City.

Another brother, Herman Otto, preceded Mrs. Barels in death.

Mrs. Barels had been active in church and community affairs. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and was the first woman elder of the church. She was a member and past president of United Presbyterian Women, taught Sunday School and had sung in the choir. She was a member of Chapter EB, P.E.O.; Clio Club; and a charter, member of Friends of the Carroll Public Library.
