Larry Alan Casey, 82, of Lewiston, passed away Thursday, June 2, 2011. Larry was born Feb. 7, 1929, to Irby Bohannon Casey and Josephine Margaret Whitlock Casey in Spokane, at Sacred Heart Hospital, the sixth of eight children.
Larry grew up on the family farm at Pleasant Prairie and attended a one-room schoolhouse through the sixth grade, Columbia Grade School for seventh and eighth, and then attended Rogers High School in Spokane.
After his school years, he served in the United States Army from April 1951 until April 1953, during the Korean conflict, as a radio operations instructor.
Larry was married to Rhonda Duffield in 1954 and had five children, David, Brian, Lori, Linda and Daniel Casey. They later divorced.
Larry met the love of his life, Barbara Louise Elliott, and they married in 1967 and were together 44 years. Larry and Barb had two sons, Richard and Christopher Casey. The couple lived in Bakersfield, Calif., for a few years and later settled in Lewiston, where they raised all of their children as one big family.
Larry loved spending time with his family and for years took them on annual camping trips to "the lot" on the Moyie River in north Idaho near the Canadian border.
He also enjoyed making "tin" men for anyone and everyone to display on their patios. He loved to go and tinker with projects in the BIG shop he built with the help of longtime friend Bill Acree. Larry enjoyed gardening for many years so he could share his large crops with family and friends.
One of the things he enjoyed most in his later years was his 1929 Model A pickup that he was able to buy a few years ago and share with anyone who would look at it and listen to his stories.
The United States Mint would also like to thank Larry for using millions of dimes, nickels and quarters (two bits) to pay his kids, grandkids, nieces, and nephews, and anyone else he could talk into it, for rubbing his feet (tired old dogs) and combing his hair.
Larry worked in many places such as Safeway, where he learned to cut meat at the age of 16. Larry shared that talent with his boys and their friends each year while helping them during hunting season and also helping his extended family (Uncle Dan and Aunt Jan) each year in Colton making sausage.
Larry retired from Potlatch Corp. in 1992 after working there for 22 years as a pipe-fitter.
Larry is survived by his wife, Barbara Casey of Lewiston sons, Rich and Kim Casey, Chris and Barbara Casey, David and Bethany Casey and Daniel Casey and daughters, Linda and Bill Memmer, and Lori and Jim Howard. Larry has multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren and is also survived by his sister, Carol Skeen of Spokane.
Preceded in death by his parents grandparents, Azro and Augusta Whitlock and Uriah and Jane Bohannon Casey his brothers and sisters, Vernon Casey, Harold Dean Casey, Eileen Chase, Bill Casey, Patrick Casey and Betty Ratcliff. He was also preceded in death by his son, Brian Dean Casey.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Royal Plaza for the amazing care they provided to Larry and his family in his last days with us. We would also like to express our love to Cheryl Loetscher for her care and compassion to Larry and his entire family.
A memorial service will be held in Larry's honor at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Good Shepard Lutheran Church, 3707 14th St., in Lewiston
