Mary was the fourth child of Wesley and Elizabeth Gunsalus. She married William Marshall Cox in 1840. They had ten children: Marshall, Elizabeth, Eliza, Malinda, William, Clara, Robert, Harry and Charles in Centre County.They also adopted Blanche Ada Dale the infant daughter of Christian and Catherine (Mussor) Dale.
When Mary died in 1873 the minor children were taken in by the older siblings. Thomas Echenwoth, husband of Clara, was appointed guardian for William Cox and Robert Cox. William Orner, husband of Elizabeth, was granted guardianship of Harry Gregg Cox, Charles E. Cox and Ida Blanche Cox.
