Richard Random Truesdell was born Feb. 18, 1832 at Steuben, Oneida County, New York and died at Sterling, Kan., Sunday evening, Feb. 7, 1909, at 6:30 p.m. aged 76 years, 11 months and 19 days. In his boyhood he was given a common school education of the time, later learning the carpenter trade. He was married July 3, 1855, to Fanny Wheelock to whom were born seven children - Mary Hinshaw, Sarah Stubbs, Harvey Truesdell, Fanny Coulter, Roma Hinshaw, Ransom and Benjamin Truesdell, of whom all are alive except Ransom who died in infancy and Rosa Hinshaw who died at the age of 33 years. On September 15, 1862, he enlisted with Light Battery H 3d Regiment of Artillery, New York Volunteers, and served in the war three years, being honorably discharged at Richmond, Vir., on the 24 of June 1865. He was promoted to Sergeant and later to quartermaster Sergeant. He served in the army of the east, being wounded in the right knee and ankle. During his prolonged sickness he was remarkably courageous and patient still reading the papers until only recently, always taking a most vital interest in public affairs. The funeral was held at the home on Thursday, Feb. 11, under the direction of Rev. A. O. Ebright, and with the aid of the G. A. R..
