Roland Dale "Stoney" Burke, 86, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on April 29, 2013 at the Maple Heights Nursing & Rehab Center in Hiawatha, Kansas. He was born on July 30, 1926 in Horton, Kansas the fourth oldest of fourteen children born to Robert and Zora Pepple Burke. Roland started playing the guitar at a early age in a little group known as "The Burke Brother's" and two of his sisters played on live radio KFEQ in St. Joseph, Missouri. On September 21, 1946 he married Stella "Arlene" Leffert in Hiawatha, Kansas. She preceded him in death on January 14, 1990. Roland was a veteran and served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. After the service he worked as a boiler maker like his father. He then went to work as truck driver for Wonder Bread. Stoney and Dale Baker started a dump truck business known as Burke & Baker prior to going to work for Brockoff Feed Yards. He then went on to drive for Hammersmith Manufacturing and Gaskell Machine and Metal before retiring. He was a member of the Horton VFW and the American Legion. Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Glen) Obbards of Horton, Kansas and Julie (Wes) Selland of Everest, Kansas; brother, Eldon (Connie) Burke of Holton, Kansas; three sisters, Aloma Heim of Bellevue, Nebraska, Wyonna "Sug" (Wayne) Pollard of Sabetha, Kansas and Reowna "Nonie" (Bernard) Ross of Silver Lake, Kansas; a daughter in law, Lisa Burke Holthaus of Everest, Kansas; nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and one great great grandson. He was also preceded in death by his parents,a son, Jim Burke, five brothers, Lyle, Kenneth, Ronald, Robert and Elwood Burke, four sisters, Twilla Schowengerdt, Juanita "Peggy" Allen, Wanda McClaskey and Aloha Burke. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends on Wednesday evening from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Burial with Military Graveside Rites will be at the Horton Cemetery.
